As part of a master's thesis I have been exploring concepts to make a web-based app that would address many of the same issues you mention here as having fixed with Visual Basic.
Are there any newer wireframe stencils that you would recommend? Visio comes with a really nice set of wireframe shapes, but you have to buy the Pro or Premium versions, as Standard doesn't come with them.
The color-less variety was a really quick hack I did to dumb it down. Is it still available?

Where can I get this? Hopefully, some will find it helpful.
